Home health care products had taken a big step forward as many patients used press feeding equipment in order to get the enteral nutrition they need. Home care tube feeding includes Par- enteral nutrition (given through a feeding tube into the vein) and enteral nutrition (given through a feeding tube into the stomach or small intestine). This was a major breakthrough in home health care as it taken some burden of nursing home long term care as it enabled carers and patients to operate simple and accurate feeding pumps in order to maintain their enteral-nutrition.

Gastrostomy's advantages

  • Gastric tubes are hidden under the clothes when not in use
  • Safe, efficient and low-risk enteral feeding method
  • Home care use of enteral feeding eliminates nursing home long term care
  • Helps patients maintain a normal nutrition condition

    Enteral feeding facts

  • There are a range of different routes and types of feeding tubes by which patients may be enterally fed.
The use of enteral tube feeding is increasing in both hospital and home health care.
Feeding regimens need to be devised and reviewed by the dietitian to take into account nutritional requirements, patient tolerance and convenience.
  • Nowadays there is a range of enteral feeding sets for home health care which play a vital role in ensuring an efficient running system of enteral nutrition.
  • Multi disciplinary teams of home health care professionals need to be available to ensure an effective follow up of home care fed patients.
  • There needs to be appropriate training education and support for those providing home care to enterally fed patients.

  • What is tube feeding and why is it used?
Tube feeding is a method of providing nutrition to people who cannot sufficiently obtain calories by eating or to those who cannot eat because they have difficulty swallowing. Tubes which transport nutritional formulas can be inserted into the stomach (G-tubes), through the nose and into the stomach (NG-tubes), or through the nose and into the small intestine (NJ tubes). The NG and NJ tubes are considered to be temporary and the G-tube is considered more permanent but it can be removed.
With all tube feeding approaches, if a person is able, he/she may continue eating and drinking while the tube feeding provides the consistent caloric intake needed for weight maintenance or gain. Thus oral intake can be continued for more pleasurable sensations, such as small bites of a favorite food.

  • Is tube feeding effective in preventing aspiration pneumonia?
Aspiration pneumonia is caused by the aspiration of food into the lungs and is the most common cause of death for persons with HD. There has not been any literature published to demonstrate that tube feeding reduces the incidence of aspiration pneumonia. Furthermore, studies have been published that show a high occurrence of aspiration pneumonia with patients who have been tube fed. This is most likely due to aspiration of saliva, which contains the bacteria found in the mouth. Good oral hygiene is required even when a person receives tube feeding.

  • Does tube feeding prolong a patients' life by providing calories?
Data suggests that tube feeding is beneficial if the patient has a reversible illness, which is not the case with HD (Huntington's disease). Therefore, tube feeding at the end stages of HD would not be beneficial under these circumstances and would be viewed as unnecessary.
At the same time, family members find it difficult to decide against alternative feeding because death may be hastened by their decision. There are no easy answers and it can be very hard to gauge a person's quality of life at the time this issue arises.

  • What are naso-gastric tubes?
Naso gastric tubes are used for naso gastric feeding and are inserted into a nostril of the nose, into the throat, down the esophagus and into the stomach. These feeding tubes are suitable only for relatively short-term use, as they are uncomfortable and tend to be removed by the patient.

  • What are gastric tubes?
Gastric tubes are inserted through a small incision in the abdomen into the stomach. Gastric tubes are suitable for long-term use as they last about six months, and can be replaced through an existing passage without an additional endoscopic procedure. Gastric tubes are useful where there is difficulty with swallowing because of neurologic or anatomic disorders and to avoid the risk of aspiration pneumonia.

  • Will the Sentinel enteral feeding pump alert if the patient vomits during an enteral feeding delivery?
There are currently no feeding pumps on the market that are capable of detecting aspiration during enteral feeding. A clinician should always monitor his patients for signs of aspiration.

  • How does the Sentinel feeding pump sensor technology detects upstream flow conditions?
The Sentinel feeding pump monitors the presence or absence of fluid to determine the flow condition of the feeding set. By monitoring for the absence of fluid, the pump can determine if the pump is experiencing either an upstream occlusion or an empty bag.

  • What is the warranty on the feeding pump?
The Sentinel feeding pump has 1 year limited warranty.
